School-based Traineeships update

School-based Traineeships update

School-based traineeships are a key focus for the Hedland Collective because they are a great way to support a future employment pathway for students in Hedland.

The traineeships allow students to complete a nationally recognised Certificate II or III qualification at the same time as completing their Western Australian Certificate of Education at Hedland Senior High School. This puts students who have completed a school-based traineeship a step ahead in building their careers once they finish their Year 12 studies.

As you may have read previously on our blogs (Getting ‘A Step Ahead’ with School-based Traineeships and A Step Ahead Program), the Hedland Collective has been working closely with Hedland Senior High School to secure placements for school-based trainees with businesses in 2020.

Hedland Senior High School has reported great results with more than 40 students commencing school-based traineeships in 2020:

  • 14 students to be placed through the Trade Training Centre
  • 14 students who will undertake a Certificate II Automotive Vehicle Servicing
  • 12-14 students undertaking Certificate III Childcare
  • 5-10 students to be placed in areas such as Business, Horticulture, etc.

The students began their traineeships last month and will complete their training in September 2021.

So far it has been exciting to see how local employers have embraced the school-based traineeships with significant benefits for themselves and the students. As the students and their employers spend time together, we hope to bring some updates on both their experiences with school-based traineeships, so watch this space!
